Any good primary school will send your child home with appropriate fictional and non-fictional reads. But it's equally important to read to your child yourself, just as long as they'll let you!
Why?
1) This is your chance to enrich a child's vocabulary by choosing titles that are just above their reading level.
2) It's a great opportunity to share stories you enjoyed as a kid!
3) If your child is struggling with reading, you can read those titles their friends are chatting about! Alternatively, if they are bored with school reading, stretch them!
4) What a fantastic way to bond with your child on a regular basis.
5) You can model good reading by using lots of expression and taking note of punctuation.
6) Demonstrate that reading is fun, not just a school-based activity!
7) This is your chance to introduce and discuss topics that matter to you both!
8) Routines (such as being read to at bedtime) make a child feel secure.
9) Create memorable time away from gadgets which impede sleep.
10) Allow your child to wind down before bed.
